↓What will your child LEARN
This class follows Alberta Education standards for 2nd grade social studies. It uses the ideas of neighbourhoods to introduce and expand upon many different subjects. The class begins by describing what a neighbourhood is and how maps and globes are used to describe an area. Next, the way neighbourhoods change is used to explain inventions, and how people move via immigration. This leads to a discussion about the first Americans, American Indians, including their homes, food, and culture. The students then learn about the pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. The class then focuses on the people within a neighbourhood and how they work together and live.
Students will study an Inuit, an Acadian and a prairie community to help them understand how communities develop. They will explore how geography, language, culture and economics—among other things—help to make each community unique. Your child will also examine the importance of history in shaping each community’s values, beliefs and situations. Through their study, they will begin to appreciate Canada’s vast and diverse landscape.
